Outdoor Experiential

Treatment Through Outdoor Activities

The Greenfield Recovery Center program offers participants a wide array of indoor and outdoor activities each day that provide an enjoyable alternative to gaming. Engaging in these activities provides participants social interaction, communication, and planning skills.

Activities include:

  • Swimming
  • Hiking
  • Exercise
  • Mountain Biking
  • Horseback Riding
  • Volleyball
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Music
  • Games
  • Skiing
  • Sledding

Additionally, our program includes local area excursions to the many outdoor destinations. Our trained recovery coaches will actively engage in these team experiential activities that produce new positive rewards in a real-world, socially-interactive way. Participants achieve a sense of personal accomplishment that establishes a higher level of self-esteem and confidence to take on these socially, mentally and physically challenging activities.

Greenfield Recovery Center is centrally located in the beautiful foothills of the Pioneer Valley in New England, which affords us easy access to some of the best winter activities in Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire. The cold and snow provide the perfect winter wonderland for enjoying outdoor activities.

The Pioneer Valley is peppered with ski resorts within the perfect range for a day trip. We visit area resorts such as Berkshire East Mountain Resort, Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort, and Bosquet Ski Area. Whether you are a first-time skier or a regular the Valley has you covered. The beautiful views of the surrounding mountains are truly a sight to see.

The area provides a diversity of cross-country ski areas just up the road at places like Northfield Mountain, and Stump Sprouts Ski Touring Center. There are a variety of trails to impress you including everything from challenging backcountry to classical skiing.

Tubing is a great alternative to skiing, and Berkshire East is a gem. With 100 tubes, 3 tubing lanes, and a magic carpet lift to get you back up top, you will find no better way to spend winter days outdoors. Additionally, we visit Butternut, which is known for its fantastic tubing conditions. Here you will find 200 tubes, 11 lanes, and the magic carpet lift.

One of the most fun outdoor winter activities and the best sledding can happen every day during the winter here in Leyden, even onsite! Hospital Hill is located at the former state hospital and one of the best sledding spots around, and Look Memorial Park offers sledding daily.

You heard me…dog sledding! This fun and exciting activity allows you to enjoy the great outdoors and some beautiful animals with unique personalities. Dog sledding makes a perfect day trip for us as Husky Works Mushing Company and Hilltown Sled Dogs are local favorites.

Winter is a favorite time of year for the locals in the area because that means it is time for ice fishing. They love to share their knowledge and will even let you borrow all the equipment you need. Family Ice Fishing Festivals are a great place to catch up on the conditions and learn from the best.

The Ice Castles in New Hampshire are a must-see! This awe-inspiring experience is built using hundreds of thousands of icicles. The excitement doesn’t stop there – we also enjoy the breathtaking LED-lit sculptures, frozen thrones, ice-carved tunnels and slides, fountains, and much more.
